As pre-exercise it is helpful to hit the devilstick back and forth with your hands while kneeling down. The devilstick stays on the floor and does not lift off. This way you can develop a good feeling for the behavior of the stick. Try to do the hits rhythmically and always think about: "first catch it - then throw it"...
